On completing phase 1 of our project, we renamed the bird room construction
"The New Sub-Tropical Rehabilitation Birdroom and Aviary".
NLPR applied to fund-giving foundations for help in building a new parrot house.
We would like to express our gratitude to the following organisations who made this possible:
The aviary is built to the following specifications:
- Aviary: 8ft x 12ft x 8ft high
- Shelter: 8ft x 11ft
- Dividing partition: 5ft x 7ft / 8ft x 4ft
The dividing partition of the shelter serves as an inside parrot room, rehabilitation area and the
smaller section provides either quarantine or a hospital area. It is equipped with lighting, including
UV light, heating and a service area. Galvanised metal all round the aviary and the shelter prevents
rodent invasion. |
The plants in the aviary comprise:
- Palm-like plants
- Bamboo bush
- Fern
- Wild grass-like plants
- Assortment of safe herbs
The aviary contains a little waterfall with a fountain. Boulders add a natural look, as does the pebble floor.
Broken pieces of coloured flagstones provide loose crazy paving. Fresh branches and a tree-stump enhance the
natural feel of the aviary and give the parrots something to chew. Reeves used for screening and a large
hollow pipe provide interest and stimulation for the birds.
The construction is fitted with high-tech security.
Our personal thanks and appreciation to John Roberts for helping with the construction of the aviary.
WE HAVE RECENTLY BUILT A SECOND AVIARY OF SIMILAR STATUS BUT LARGER. IT WAS IMMEDIATELY USED IN AN EMERGENCY TO QUARANTINE THREE COCKATOOS THAT HAD BEEN CONFISCATED ON WELFARE GROUNDS.
